So tonight’s Monday Night Mashout was different. It felt like it had purpose. I think we all want to find our or a purpose in life that has value. We want that purpose to mean something to the people we share it with. I’ve always thought radio purpose could be so much more than a few tunes. We are now blessed to have a platform like internet radio. The playing field has changed. We have a choice as the creators of radio entertainment. The consumer has a choice of what he it she will take in to there ear gate. Some of our choices won’t be popular, but I’m cool with that. Being unpopular ain’t half bad.. slightly less stressful. So for the month of September I plan to bring you radio programming with a purpose.
We can can take our conversations deeper. We can expand our listening palette’s.
So every Monday you can tune in at 8pm and hear convo you won’t hear on other stations or shows. You will music that probably won’t make it on other Dj’s playlist. If you tune every Monday from 8pm till 10pm and you will find out what your radio is supposed to sound like.

A New Measure of Greatness

20140120-140059.jpg

I spent a lot of my life pursing things I considered great.. Mostly all of them revolved around music and this compulsive thought that I belonged in the music industry. What could be greater? The greatest people were making music when this thought entered my mind like Run, Prince and Mike. Everything in my mind said I belonged there. I put in the work to know the histories of many musics styles and I honed my craft. All the things the great ones did I attempted. In retrospect I did make it inside the door of the industry, no platinum plaques and no world tours but I have traveled well via my talent. I have met folks you rank on the list of greatest of greats. I quietly have been apart of the beginnings legacies that are now receiving high praise. I have passively changed my city. Those things are great, right? At some point in my matured life those things didn’t seem to matter enough. Take note friend, the praise from greatness won’t save you when your world is crashing around you and this is something I will never forget. So right now I measure greatness differently. “Do I want to do great things or things that are greatly needed?” The self-serving concept of greatness has tarnished many things I’ve loved dearly. The desire to do what is greatly needed is a Spirit inspired sentiment. It truly is the path of the less traveled. It is lonely. It doesn’t always lead to financial wealth either. It actually could have you giving things away that others perceive as having great value. A lot of those things are not ours to begin with, they were given to us be given to those with a great need for them. My view point has been transformed, the greatest thing I can now do is whatever it is God has placed in front of me to do. God specializes in doing things that are greatly needed and our finite minds are unable to measure the true greatness of any of that. “Does the world need another great Dj?” I don’t think so no better I know so! The world needs better parent, better teachers, better ways to reach our lost souls. That need is great! So what happens to all the time spent practicing and studying to be great something? In God’s infinite plan nothing is wasted not one second of our lives, not one mistake and operating inside that plan is my new measure of greatness.

RANDOM THOUGHTS… “I AIN’T GOING TO SEE DJANGO WITH A D”

images-6

NOW I WAS PROBABLY AS EXCITED AS THE NEXT QUENTON TARANTINO FAN TO SEE WHAT HE HAD CONJURED FOR US THIS CHRISTMAS. THEN I HEARD ABOUT SPIKE LEE’S COMMENTS ON THE MOVIE… THEN I WATCHED BAMBOOZLED AND THAT SEALED IT! I AM NOT SURE I LIKE OR APPRECIATE WHITE PEOPLE TELLING MY STORY OR MY ANCESTORS STORY WITHOUT THE SENSITIVITY IT DESERVES. CALL ME OLD SCHOOL, CALL ME BLIND, BUT RIGHT NOW I FEEL LIKE STANDING UP FOR SOMETHING IS NEEDED.article-2248211-16789D7A000005DC-728_634x422 SO FOR ME THIS IS IT, NOW I AM SURE AT SOME POINT I WILL SEE THE MOVIE BUT I AM GOING TO BE STRATEGIC WITH MY DOLLAR ON THIS ONE.
NOW I AM NOT SURE THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE THAT FEEL STRONGLY ABOUT TARANTINO’S USE OF THE N-WORD, BUT I DO. IT MAKES ME UNEASY TO HEAR THE WHITE ACTORS CASTED IN HIS MOVIES USE IT EXCESSIVELY. IN THOSE SCENE’S NIGGER IS SLUNG AROUND RECKLESSLY AND CARELESSLY,
THERE IS NO ENDEARMENT BEHIND, IT ALWAYS FEELS RACIALLY DEROGATORY AND I JUST AIN’T THAT COOL WITH IT. SO CONSIDER THIS A NON-AGGRESSIVE BOYCOTT, FOR THE MOMENT.

Nas Lied to YOU!

20121214-011213.jpg
I left the recreation center I teach at on Thursday’s(shout out Beatty Rec!) this is one of the places I share my passion for the culture of hip-hop. As I pulled away from the rec I slipped thru an alley; on my right side vacant low income housing; on my left side a wall full of colors. I hop out my car to get a full view of the voice on the wall. I smile. This plus the very young b boys I work with are the signs of life within Hip-hop. Nas you liar.

Teachers teach… Kings only rule.

What you are looking at right here is Hip-Hop. I know there are many people that will claim that this beautiful thing called Hip-Hop has died a slow merciless death, but I beg to differ. Father Bam said the fifth element of Hip-Hop was knowledge, we the torchbearers have that knowledge and ARE sharing it with the youth. So there will be moments where the harvest may not be as plentiful as has been in years past, but the seeds are still strong and growing.
